Behind the Scenes at Spoken Black Girl
So you've probably noticed that things have been quiet on the blog lately, and just in case you were wondering, no I haven't abandoned you! In fact, I've been spending my time plotting and planning the next chapter for Spoken Black Girl so that I can be of better service to you, dear reader!
What Happened?
This winter was a tough one for me. My anxiety was on ten every day because I was piling so many projects onto my plate and burning the candle at both ends to stay afloat. I overloaded myself and then beat myself up for not being able to do everything perfectly, which led to periods of depression. While I was telling you all to self-care, I was doing a terrible job at taking care of myself. As we mental health folk always say, you can't pour from an empty cup and my cup was bone dry. Eventually, I decided to take a break from blogging in order to double down on mental, spiritual, and physical renewal.
Changing My Thinking
Blogging about mental health can be draining. Sharing my most personal struggles with the whole worldwide web has been an exciting, but nerve-wracking experience that ultimately magnified my insecurities. As I began to gain more readers and followers, I started to feel pressure building up to be the perfect, smiling Spoken Black Girl that I portrayed myself to be. For a while, I even considered scrapping Spoken Black Girl altogether. But then I realized that Spoken Black Girl isn't just about me. This blog and the brand that I've built around it are not just some giant ego trip that can be stopped by something as inconsequential as my own self-doubt. Spoken Black Girl is about the women of color who read and follow and like and retweet. It's about the women out there with stories of pain, healing, and transformation that have been kept under wraps for too long. I believe that we should use our voices to share the kind of stories that might have comforted us during our darkest hour, stories that show that self-love and abundant living is not only possible but attainable for each of us. I want to amplify voices that are too often silenced or ignored, so on May 15, 2017, Spoken Black Girl Magazine will make its debut! Introducing Spoken Black Girl Magazine! This online publication will be your go to spot for mental health and wellness content.
